The Preterite Tense (Pretérito Indefinido)

Used for completed actions at a specific point in the past — "I went", "she ate", "we visited".

Regular Preterite

• -AR verbs: remove -ar → add: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron
• hablar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron
• -ER/-IR verbs: remove ending → add: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron
• comer: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comisteis, comieron
• vivir: viví, viviste, vivió, vivimos, vivisteis, vivieron

Key Irregular Preterite Verbs

• ser and ir (both identical in the preterite): fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron
• e.g. Fui al supermercado — I went to the supermarket | Fui médico — I was a doctor
• tener: tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron

Time Expressions for Preterite

• ayer — yesterday | anteayer — the day before yesterday

• el lunes pasado — last Monday

The Imperfect Tense (Pretérito Imperfecto)

Used for: past descriptions ("it was", "there were"), habitual past actions ("I used to", "I would"), and ongoing background actions.

Formation

• -AR verbs: remove -ar → add: -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, -aban
• hablar: hablaba, hablabas, hablaba, hablábamos, hablabais, hablaban
• -ER/-IR verbs: remove ending → add: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían
• comer: comía, comías, comía, comíamos, comíais, comían

Irregular Imperfect (only three!)

• ser: era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran
• ir: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban
• ver: veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían

Preterite vs Imperfect

• Preterite = a completed action at a specific time: "Ayer fui al cine" (Yesterday I went to the cinema)
• Imperfect = habitual past / background / description: "Cuando era niño, iba al parque todos los días" (When I was a child, I used to go to the park every day)
• Together: "Comía cuando llegó mi madre" — I was eating (imperfect, background) when my mother arrived (preterite, completed event)

The Simple Future Tense (Futuro Simple)

Used for future intentions and predictions — more formal than ir + a + infinitive.

Formation

• Take the infinitive (whole word) + add the future endings: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án
• hablar: hablaré, hablarás, hablará, hablaremos, hablaréis, hablarán
• comer: comeré, comerás, comerá, comeremos, comeréis, comerán
• vivir: viviré, vivirás, vivirá, viviremos, viviréis, vivirán

Irregular Future Stems

• tener → tendr- | haber → habr- | poder → podr- | poner → pondr-
• querer → querr- | saber → sabr- | salir → saldr- | valer → valdr-
• venir → vendr- | hacer → har- | decir → dir- | ir → ir-
• e.g. Tendré — I will have | Habrá — There will be | Iré — I will go | Haré — I will do

• El año pasado / el verano pasado — last year / last summer

• Uses same stems as the simple future + imperfect -ER/-IR endings: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían

• Irregular stems same as future: tendría, habría, podría, querría, sabría, saldría, vendría, haría, diría, iría
• Si tuviera mucho dinero, viajaría por todo el mundo — If I had a lot of money, I would travel the world
• Si pudiera, estudiaría en el extranjero — If I could, I would study abroad

Comparatives and Superlatives

• Comparative: más + adjective + que (more … than) | menos + adjective + que (less … than)
• e.g. El español es más fácil que el chino — Spanish is easier than Chinese
• Superlative: el/la/los/las + más + adjective + de (the most … in)
• e.g. Es la ciudad más bonita del mundo — It is the most beautiful city in the world
• Irregular: bueno → mejor (better/best) | malo → peor (worse/worst) | grande → mayor (bigger/biggest/older) | pequeño → menor (smaller/smallest/younger)
